LBO Publication Support

by Walter Brisken last modified Dec 02, 2016
This page contains information about LBO page charge support for VLBA observers.

Publication support coverage

LBO publication support is for VLBA users who have no other resources available to cover page charges.  Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • If you are supported by a grant, we suggest you use your own resources to allow others to use the limited LBO publication support
  • If you are not supported by a grant, please request publication support from your department before requesting support from LBO
  • Make your LBO request early; there is no guarantee that resources will be available late in the fiscal year.

Publication criteria

Publication support will only be available for publications meeting one of the  following criteria:

  1. The publication to be supported reports original observations using the VLBA, or
  2. The publication contains original analysis of archival VLBA data and/or is  based on a significant amount of previously unpublished VLBA data.

Publication Support Requirements

In order to receive support for publication, note the following:

  • The publication must include, as a footnote, the following statement exactly, "The Long Baseline Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc."
  • LBO adjunct scientific staff must note their affiliation with the LBO as, "[AUTHOR'S NAME] is also an Adjunct Astronomer at the Long Baseline Observatory."
  • Support is only available to authors with affiliations to US institutions.

Submitting Publication Support Requests

Publication support for the LBO will be handled by the NRAO Library. Requestors should fill out the web form http://library.nrao.edu/pcform.shtml .  All required fields must be filled out, including

  • Proposal code(s) for the observations being studied within the publication.  Ensure inclusion of all proposal codes using the notes field for additional codes.
  • The number assigned to this paper on the AstroPh archive, https://arxiv.org .

Page charge invoices received without supporting paperwork will not be honored.

Additional requirements for publications, even those not seeking support

Data is collected for each publication making use of LBO resources (VLBA telescope data or LBO staff).  This information is reported to the National Science Foundation and affects the funding for the LBO.

  • All LBO staff, in addition to scientists who have used the VLBA or its archival data, are required to notify the NRAO Librarian of any paper submitted for publication, regardless of publication support request.
  • All publications showing an LBO author or using VLBA data must include as a footnote or acknowledgement the exact statement, "The Long Baseline Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc."
